OnionShare, embodying the ethos of ‘Privacy + Productivity,’ is an open-source tool designed for securely and anonymously sharing files, hosting websites, and chatting. It leverages the Tor network to provide a peer-to-peer (P2P) encrypted file-sharing service, functioning similarly to an anonymous Dropbox. This allows users to securely share and receive files containing sensitive information.

Hosting a static website with OnionShare is straightforward and doesn’t require setting up a separate server. The tool initiates a web server directly on your computer, making it accessible to others through a Tor onion service. For confidential discussions, OnionShare offers the feature to create secret, temporary chat rooms that can accommodate hundreds of participants. These chat rooms are accessible through a unique OnionShare address loaded in the Tor Browser. Participants are assigned random names upon joining, ensuring anonymity. Conversations in these chat rooms are end-to-end encrypted, and no account creation is necessary.

It’s important to note that certain functionalities in OnionShare, like the chat feature, rely on JavaScript. Therefore, participants in joint chat meetings need to adjust their Tor Browser security settings to either “Standard” or “Safer.” The “Safest” setting may not support these functionalities.
